What happens after you report a clone

After you report a clone of your store, the host, registrar or blocklist reviews your report. Most act within a week, some take longer. Recon keeps checking the fake website on every scan and updates the case, so you know when it goes offline or when to send the next report.

Recon never removes a site itself, and no one can promise when a company will act. Your part is to send the reports in order.

See which clones you reported

In Recon, open Clones. Each clone you reported shows Reported, still online until Recon sees it go offline.

A clone in the Clones of your store list marked Reported, still online

On the case page, the badge beside the address shows how many companies you reported it to, for example Reported to 2 companies. Each report row shows Sent and the date.

If the site is still online

When the site is still up 5 days or more after your first report, the case shows Still online and the number of days since your first report.

The Still online 7 days after your first report banner

  1. Open the case.
  2. Under Get it taken down, find the next report marked Not sent.
  3. Click Review report and send it.

Each report goes to a different company that can remove the site. A good rule: if the site is still online a week after a report, send the next one.

When you sent every report

After you send every report, the case shows You reported this site, with the date. If the site is still up 5 days later, the banner says it is still online after your reports. Companies can take a week or more to act.

The You reported this site banner with Check now outlined

To check the site straight away, click Check now. Recon opens the site and tells you what it found, for example The site is still online or The site is offline.

What each status means

  • Offline since and a date: the site no longer loads. The case shows This site has been offline since and the date.
  • Warning page since and a date: the host put a warning page in front of the site. Shoppers see the warning instead of the clone.
  • Blocks Recon’s checks: the site stops Recon from loading it, so Recon cannot tell if it is still up. Open the address in your browser. If it no longer loads, dismiss the case. See Dismiss a case or mark a domain as yours.
  • Back again: the same clone came back on a new address. The new case says which earlier clone it copies, and the reports are ready again.

Where offline clones go

Offline clones leave the main list. To see them, open Clones and click the History row near the bottom of the page. They are under Clones now offline.

Recon keeps checking an offline clone on each scan. If it comes back, Recon reopens the case.

How Recon tells you

  • The summary email tells you when a clone you reported goes offline. It is on every plan, when Email me a summary is on in Settings.
  • On the Pro plan, Recon also sends a clone alert when a clone comes back on a new address. Alerts are grouped: Recon waits about five minutes, then sends at most one clone alert an hour. See the plans at https://apps.shopify.com/recon-bot.
